Buffalo, New York (March 22, 2013) Mike Janis Racing started the season out at the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida this past weekend with the hopes of having a nice relaxing weekend of racing. However, that analogy did not last long at all.

“We brought our brand new K100 Fuel Treatment / Mike Janis Superchargers 2013 Chevy Camaro to the first event knowing that new cars may always take a few bugs to work out” said Mike Janis, Owner/Driver at MJR. “This car was actually the opposite. Joe Peters and the guys at Race Car Specialties did an amazing job with this car and by the cars fourth run it appeared we had found the sweet spot. We had made a few runs that resulted in tire shake and ended up qualifying us in the 16th spot. Qualifying number sixteen means you will be racing the number one qualifier first round. My son and Crew Chief Mike Jr. called a meeting and said “If we are going to have a shot right now, we need to take a chance, think logical and go in a different direction.” There was a brand new set of Goodyear tires up in the trailer that were a test set we had never tried before. We brought them over to Bryce Jones and Brent Fisher from Goodyear, and they mounted them up. The events that took place after that is a time which will live with MJR forever.

“We knew we needed to make a soild run” said Kevin Peters, Co-Crew Chief/Lead Engineer at MJR. “The car left the line and went through the transition as smooth as I have ever seen a car with those new Goodyear tires on. The progressive times showed it was fixing to go 5.88 and just before the 1/8 mile you could see fuel starting to spray out. This caused the motor to go lean, pop the burst panels, which then ignited a fire like we have never seen before. MJR managed to get the round win after number one qualifier Mike Castellana had slowed. We got to the end of the track and the front nose was completely burned off the car, nothing left. Even though we had just taken the round win, we considered our weekend to be finished, at least that is what we had thought. A two dollar broken fitting was the start of these events.”

“Where to even begin” said Mike Janis Jr. GM/Crew Chief at MJR. “We towed our car back to the pits and there were more people standing there than we could count. The car went up on jacks for us to look at the damages. We began to look and realized that other than a front end, we could work all night and get this Chevy Camaro running again. The big news came when our very good friend and customer from Sweden Adam Flamholc walks over and says “You can use my 1968 Camaro front end.” That would be impossible we thought to ourselves as it was not even the same car in the least bit. We did some measuring and adjusting finally realizing that maybe it was a possibility! Work began on the MJR Camaro. We worked late into the night as we waited on the spare front end that Adam Flamholc was having driven up to us from Fort Myers. When that arrived we went to town on it and made it happen. MJR would hit the race track 2nd round with what we called it a “6813” Camaro!”

“This by far was one of the best experiences of my life”, said Janis Sr. “I have never seen so much support from not only our friends, but the fans. Those fans stuck around into the late hours of the night and all pitched in on this heroic effort. It was enough to bring tears to your eyes. We value the relationships with our partners as top priority on our list. Whatever it took to get that K100 Fuel Treatment / Mike Janis Superchargers Chevy Camaro back out there for the 2nd round was not going to stop up us. At MJR we do not believe in quitting or letting our partners down. This situation showed just that. We ended up losing 2nd round in a very close race after a faulty ignition wire was cutting in and out. We may have not won the race, but I can tell you for sure we won the war. There were 50,000 plus in the grandstands giving our team a standing ovation on Sunday as they headed down the return road. Never give up, follow your dreams, and when you think something may not be possible, think again. We proved it this weekend at the Gatornationals, and it will forever change the imprint MJR has in this sport. We left the race sitting 8th in the NHRA Pro Mod Championship points and will continue to work for the 2013 NHRA Pro Mod Championship. The Safety Safari was spraying the car down before it had even come to a stop. These men and women risk their lives at every event for us and we could not be more thankful.
